Species
The Best Resource for Jigging and
Popping
Amberjack
(Seriola Dumerili) a.k.a Reef Donkey, is
known as one of the most aggressive,
hardest fighting fish in the sea. Because
of that, it is one of the most sought after
fish for jiggers. Regardless of the depth
of the water, amberjack will fight you all
the way to the boat. They are found in most
of the world's oceans and range in size
from 15 to 150 pounds. The current world
record weighed in at 155 lbs, 10 oz.
Jigs
Amberjack can't resist long jigs
ripped through the water column at
high speeds. Some Popular Jigs for
Amberjack include:
-
Smith Nagamasa
-
MC Works Killer Jig
-
Smith Mejiyume SL
-

Tackle Selection
Because the strength of these fish,
they will test every part of your
tackle. Ensuring that you have the
strongest hooks, connections, and
hardware is of the utmost importance.
PE6-8 line is the ideal set up, but
you can get away with PE4-5 if
needed.
Leader sizes should range from 100lb
to 220lb test. Because Amberjack are
generally not line shy, fluorocarbon
is not needed.
Technique Tip
If you find that you are getting hit
without a hook up, try this- mix in a
pause part way through. Give it a
single or a double "yo-yo" style jig-
sometimes allowing the fish to catch
up to the jig can make the
difference.
